HTML.edit version 1.1 (.134)
©1994 by Murray Altheim, Equinox Development
All Rights Reserved.
• PROJECT STRATEGY
HTML.edit is an editor for the HyperText Markup Language, the text-based
coding used for documents on World Wide Web (WWW). All HTML-coded
documents created by HTML.edit are saved external to the editor as ASCII
text files. World Wide Web servers follow HyperText Transfer Protocol
(HTTP) and deliver on demand HTML documents to remote clients using
browser programs like NCSA Mosaic.
• HTML.edit INSTALLATION
A font suitcase containing Futura 10 and 12 pt fonts is included. System 6
users should install this font in their System file using Font/DA Mover.
System 7 users can merely drop it onto their System Folder icon. The
suitcase represents 14K in disk space. If you already have 10 and 12 point
Futura installed, do not install the font suitcase.
The editor will operate with as little as 1050K memory, but will not be able
to zoom to a larger screen size. I'd recommend giving the application 1300K
of RAM, as then you'll be able to enlarge the window to its full 640 by 640
pixel size, and hopefully eliminate any memory-related problems. If 1300K of
RAM seems a lot, remember how much you normally allocate to HyperCard.
• NEW FEATURES
Most of the new features are covered in more detail within HTML.edit Help:
+ This editor is a standalone application and does not require HyperCard
to run. It's larger than a stack, as it includes the HyperCard engine.
The advantage is that HyperCard 2.2 is not required to use it.
+ This version sports an Index card, with functions for saving and
deleting multiple documents.
+ The Editor Window is now sizeable up to 640 by 640 pixels.
+ Each document is now divided into a Header, Body, and Footer section.
This is in keeping with the proper format of an HTML document, and
allows for documents larger than 30K characters.
+ An oft-requested feature left off version 1.0 was an option for using
the cursor keys as navigation within the editor window. This is now the
Arrow Keys in Text option set from the Preferences card.
+ A late-breaking feature is the ability to double-click on HTML.edit
documents or drag text files onto the HTML.edit icon to import the text
files into HTML.edit. Note that the editor MUST be open for this to work.
If you accidentally do open the editor and receive the error message,
please quit and reopen the editor directly, as it will not operate
correctly if not started in this manner. I've got a little AppleEvent
figuring to do...
• HTML.edit HELP
HTML.edit contains both a printable, hyperText Help document and also
"A Beginner's Guide to HTML" (downloaded from NCSA). Balloon Help is
implemented for many features.
I haven't cleaned up all of the Balloon help text, so you may find some
errors there.
• LIMITATIONS
HTML.edit is not able to contain more than ~30K (29,996 characters) in a
field. Documents can be larger than 30K when including the Header and
Footer areas (and will export the complete contents of Header, Body and
Footer), but imported documents will be truncated to 30K. If a future
version of HyperCard allows for unlimited field lengths, I won't be the
only one to breathe a sigh of relief.
